Fiona Banner

Fiona banners work includes sculpture, drawing, instillation and text, she produced many large scale ‘wordscapes’ in which she narrated (war) films. She uses quite raw, dramatic and powerful words to convey the feelings associated with the topics of her work. I am interested in producing ‘wordscapes’ as part of my project and i intend to use Banners work to inspire my work.

Frances Lise McGurn

Frances Lise McGurn paints on canvasses as well as directly onto the walls of her exhibition space, often combining the two - (bringing her brush off the canvas and onto/ across the wall). She paints a lot about her own life experiences e.g. motherhood and female sexuality. There is quite a lot of ‘movement’ in her work as individual body parts float across the different surfaces (canvas and walls). She uses swift brushstrokes and repeated marks as well as layering. Her work seems to suggest themes of distance and connection. She painted a lot of her work during lockdown when the gap between private and public lives was highlighted as well as the response to certain kinds of behaviour. I am interested in exploring her method of expanding her work off the canvas and onto different surfaces.

Louise Giovanelli

Louse Giovanelli focusses on light and dark reflecting off fabric in her luminous paintings, within each series of work she repeats her motifs and certain paintings appears nearly identical except slightly alterations of the composition or tonality. She manipulates light and form as well as focussing on the folds in the fabric, glitches and interruptions to the surface interest her. She applies thick paint flecks over a figurative background which creates an illusion of depth on a flat surface. She uses the ambiguity of her subject as a source of power and light. She has inspired me to incorporate the fabric I used in my photographs into my paintings in some way, whether it be physically using the fabric itself in my work or finding interesting ways to paint it.

Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly developed a ‘gestural vocabulary’ in which each line and colour is infused with meaning and energy. There is a lot of personal connotation in his work as well as mythological interest and he expresses/ narrates his paintings through words inscribed onto the surface . His works are intimate and abstract and are focussed around ancient, modern and classical poetic traditions as well as incorporating visual information from everyday life. He explores the potential of both structure and meaning.

Tracey Emin

Tracey Emin is known for her autobiographical and confessional artwork. Her work is very raw and visceral as well as emotive, she deals with themes of personal experience and heightened states of emotion as well as themes of love, desire, loss and grief. She unravels the constructs of ‘woman’ and ‘self’ through probing self - exploration.
