For our second 1 day project we were asked to take the overground train for a few stops and document our work through coloured drawing.

what is going well? What isn’t going so well and why?

I found it hard to draw on the moving train as it was a lot to absorb and draw in a short amount of time. My drawings were quite plain and I wasn’t able to use a wide range of media because I did not have access to it. I liked the way I captured the light in a couple of the drawings - one being still bright light and one being the light produced from movement across a landscape. The blending of the pastels went well, with some areas being left unblended, which gives tonal/textural contrast.

In the development work I tried layering sheets of tracing paper with buildings drawn on them, I then tried putting a brightly painted sheet behind them to give the impression of light shining through, but it was unsuccessful as it didn’t show through all the layers of tracing paper. Although, I did like the effect that the layering produced, it looked like a landscape that moves out into the distance as the third layer was more blurred than the clear first layer.

How do I feel about how it is going?

I feel that I’d like to have more of a direction in my mind of where my work is going, I’d also like to be producing more work so that I’m able to pull out elements of different work that I like and use those in my future work. This work is definitely not some of my best, I feel that the quality and standard is quite poor and I’d like to work on being able to produce high quality work under time pressure. I need to work on my time management in general because I did not have enough time to make my development work as I spent too long thinking about what I was going to do.

How have discussions with other people affected my work?

I had a discussion with my tutor who helped me to think about the way a landscape seems when you’re looking at it from a higher point. This made me think about the fact that I could see into the distance all the buildings getting smaller and smaller and less clear as it gets further away from you. I thought about layers and producing this effect using tracing paper which I had easy access to in my studio. This made me consider using different mediums on each layer of tracing paper and then building them up so you can see a whole landscape of buildings into the distance.
