Collage inspired by Hurvin Anderson

I liked the way that Hurvin Anderson uses graph lines in his work so that you can see the colours that make up each individual square, so I decided to use them in my collage. I used photos which I had taken outside in nature and experimented with blocking out areas of light with dark, watered down paint like Anderson does. I used acrylic paint because of its vibrancy and boldness of colour. I’d like to make the work more my own and unique, perhaps by using the same techniques but with figures or portraits or take elements of his techniques and use them for something completely new and different.

Drawing studies inspired by Richard Aldrich

The two drawing studies above were inspired by Richard Aldrich’s piece called ‘Too often art and ideas exist on the same plane.’ Where he took a more logical and pragmatic approach, I wanted to take a more emotional approach and apply my work to life and ‘living’. I was also inspired by the Tracy Emin exhibition I went to see called ‘Loneliness of the soul’ where she paints sad almost ruined/ lifeless forms/ figures and uses her own writing to illustrate them. Here I did not use my own writing but I used a quote from one of my favourite poets (Blake Auden) because the piece of writing really resonated with me and my own experiences of living. I used charcoal on a paper in one drawing and white chalk pastel on black card in the other because I wanted to create a contrast and I felt that the looseness of the charcoal would suit the style of the piece.

Technique study inspired by Noah Davis

I noticed that Noah Davis had a very distinct style of painting running through most of his work but one of his painting stood out to me because the technique of application was very different to the others. When I went up close to look at the painting I could see more clearly that the paint had been thickly layered on and something had been dragged through the paint before it had dried. I did some research and found that he had layered oil paint and then used the back of the paintbrush to drag through the paint, I found this really interesting and decided to explore this myself using acrylic paint, texture paste and the back and front of a paintbrush.

Texture study inspired by Desire Moheb-Zandi

An element of Moheb- Zandis work which I liked was her use of spray paint on top of fabric, In a couple of her works it looked like she had ripped holes in the fabric and spray painted around the negative space to highlight it. I dicided to experiment with this myself by using coloured linen and neon orange spray paint. I cut a small hole in the centre of the linen and then ripped it open with my hands, I then sprayed around the hole and in the negative space in the centre to create a contrast between the positive and negative space. I’d like to add more material elements to my work in the future to make them more texturally complex.

Colour and concept study inspired by Pablo Bronstein

I found the concept behind Pablo Bronsteins work really interesting, I liked the way he portrayed hell - something supposedly so dark and evil- in a luxurious, wonderful light with bright and vibrant colours. I started thinking about ways to portray negative things in a positive light or positive things in a negative light and then I thought about contrasts and oxymorons in the natural world, my mind immediately went to poisonous flowers because flowers are something so beautiful, delicate and fragile but when they are poisonous they can be evil, destructive and murderous. So, I decided to paint some poisonous foxgloves in colours that I feel are linked to death and evil (blacks and reds). I chose watercolour because I wanted to experiment with the medium Bronstein uses whilst using a different colour pallet. Bronstein uses background colours that either contrast or compliment the main focus of the piece, I chose crimson because it not only evokes feelings of death but I had also used it to build the colour of the foxgloves so it compliments them.
