Reflection

Today I had a discussion with my tutor where we had a look at the work I’d done so far for this project and considered ways of combining elements from different pieces. He suggested to me that I think about the space in my work relative to the figure and gave me some artists to look (below) who use the space in their work differently from one another. Celia Paul blurs her paintings into the background to make it ‘one’ whereas Julian Shnabel uses large amounts of empty space which draws your attention to the figurative painting, Kaye Donachie uses a limited colour palette of muted blues, pinks/purples and blends them all into grey backgrounds- almost removing the background altogether. We also talked about the use of the poetry in my work and tried to think of ways of incorporating it into my work.

Together with my tutor I came to the conclusion that I liked my pieces on cardboard as the crumpled cardboard alludes to ‘space’ as well as giving the work a rough and incomplete appearance which compliments the experimental abstract figures in the work. I wanted to continue to experiment with these whilst adding new elements from my other work. I had previously written out my favourite poem ‘disconnected’ by Rupi Kaur on khadi paper and ripped it up and then stuck it back on another sheet of khadi paper layering the fragments ontop of each other. I liked how this turned out so I decided to write the poem out again and rip it up and stick a few fragments on a piece of old cardboard, I then used my photography to give me a rough idea of the shape and proportions of the figure and used charcoal to sketch it out. I then used acrylic paint on a dry brush and filled it in moving outside the lines I had drawn intentionally, I then used charcoal for the head/hair and scribbled it on messily.

I intend to continue experimenting with the khadi paper on cardboard as a background for my abstract figure drawings/paintings and I want to find a way to unite the foreground and background so that they compliment each other.
