What is going well and what isn’t going so well and why?

Experimenting with working on different surfaces is going well, I have worked on Himalayan Lokta paper, cardboard, grey paper and canvas as well as khadi paper and card (previously), I have experimented with using different mediums depending on the surface I am using for example oil pastel on Lokta paper and acrylic on cardboard as well as charcoal on paper. I continue to struggle with drawing the proportions of body parts correctly -to scale and often the figures I paint/draw look disproportionate, i think that perfecting drawing the figure will come with practice. I am also finding it challenging to abstract the figure but still make it hold the resemblance of a body, I think there is a fine line between abstraction and figuration in these situations and its difficult to combine the two.

How can I develop my work from here?

I’d like to work on more large scale paintings on canvas, I produced one acrylic painting on canvas (above) inspired by Tracy Emin; I found that due to the lack of contrast in colours and undefined lines the figure is blurred and the body parts are unrecognisable which I like because it is abstract yet figurative at the same time. However it is difficult to see the position of the body and the head so I think in future I can work on improving shape and composition so that the subject of the painting is clearer.

What am I learning about materials and processes?

I’m learning that currently I prefer quick, sketchy abstract painting to detailed and precise painting because I feel like I can put more energy into abstract drawings/paintings as well as having more freedom to express myself. I’ve learnt that I should always paint the background colour first before drawing the figure because otherwise the lines get washed away. I’ve discovered that I enjoy working on old cardboard because of its roughness and creases in the surface.
