Analysis of Gerhard Richter’s work

Richter’s previous works have mainly been large scale paintings but this exhibition included many small drawings. The drawings are all on paper and they were made between 1999 and 2021. He included a series of over- painted photographs of woodland alongside drawings in graphite and pencil and several using coloured inks. “In these works, the fluidity and unpredictability of the pools of ink are counterbalanced by the structures of linear graphite markings.”

I particularly like the graphite drawings because they show quite a methodical approach to mark-making that echoes the processes and styles in Richter’s painting practice. The drawings are quite abstract yet they are almost architectural in their composition with repeating lines and shaded areas. They are built up in layers to create a dynamic whole.
